PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which keeps stable chargeability for a long period of time even when a contact charging member is used, and is high in service life, high in image quality and low in running cost. SOLUTION: The surface projection-recess pitch Sm-d of an image carrier 1 ranges from 10 to 100μm. The brush diameter Aμm and the brush fiber density B/cm<SP>2</SP>of a brush member 20 cleaning the surface of a contact charging member 2, and the weight average particle size Cμm of toner satisfy C≤A≤Sm-d, 0.05<B×A<SP>2</SP>×π×10<SP>-8</SP>/4<0.5 and B≥20,000.
