Phosphor compositions having the formula (Sr,Ca,Ba)<SUB>1-x</SUB>Eu<SUB>x</SUB>Al<SUB>2-y</SUB>M<SUB>z</SUB>O<SUB>4-3/2y</SUB>F<SUB>z</SUB>, where M is Mg and/or Zn; 0.001<x<0.15, 0<=y<=0.3, and 0<z<=0.2; and light emitting devices including a light source and the above phosphor. Also disclosed are blends of (Sr,Ca,Ba)<SUB>1-x</SUB>Eu<SUB>x</SUB>Al<SUB>2-y</SUB>M<SUB>z</SUB>O<SUB>4-3/2y</SUB>F<SUB>z </SUB>and one or more additional phosphors and light emitting devices incorporating the same.
