Device and method for extracting a swab

A device for extracting a sample from a swab comprises a cavity 5 into which a sample carrier 7 carrying the swab may be introduced. The sample carrier can be the cotton-wool part of a cotton bud whose end 9 is broken off, and the sample is then sealed in the cavity by a cover 15. Liquid, e.g. distilled water, can be introduced into the cavity from a reservoir 25 via a liquid inlet 21 connected to the cavity and the liquid 261 may be removed from the cavity via at least one liquid outlet 23. The outlet 23 has an interface suitable for connection to a microfluid system. This process lends itself to extensive automation because the device forms a cartridge 1 that can be connected to an analysis system.
