Propylene is dimerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least one of K, Rb and Cs supported on pellets of MgO having a density of 0.1-1.0 gm./c.c. which have been made from MgO having a bulk density of 4-30 lb./cu. ft. Dimerization is preferably effected at 100-250 DEG C., 15-4000 p.s.i.g., and L.H.S.V. of 0.5-20. Products are predominantly isomeric 2-methylpentenes, e.g. 4-methyl-1-pentene, cis-4-methyl-2 pentene, trans-4-methyl-2 pentene, 2-methyl-1 pentene and 2-methyl-2 pentene. The proportions in which such products are produced may be varied by regulation of temperature and addition of such compounds as K1CO3, KCl or K1SiO3 to the support. Dimerization may be effected in the presence of inert diluents.ALSO:K, Cs or Rb, or any mixture thereof, is supported on MgO having a bulk density of 4-30 lbs./cu.foot and a pellet density of 0,1-1,0 gm./c.c. Additionally the support may contain 1-30% K2CO3, KCl or K2SiO3. Examples are given. |
