A device for controlling a heating apparatus comprising a modulating burner is provided with a fan to supply air to the burner, detection means to detect the required heat output, and a control unit which controls the speed of the fan as a function of the required output specified by the detection means. The fan is designed as an a.c. fan which can be connected to the mains in series with a resistor and a semiconductor switching element, preferably a triac. In this arrangement, second detection means relay to the control unit a signal which corresponds to the actual burner output, and the control unit controls the speed of the fan by the semiconductor switching element being controlled so as to be on (conductive) during zero crossings only, in such a way that the desired heat output is delivered.
