The invention relates to a method and a machine for severing the swim bladder 8 from the fish's back 7 after splitting and filleting. The method involves laying the back 7 on a guide wedge 6, which is inserted into the swim bladder 5 and opens it up, bringing the back forward by means of a mechanical feed equipment 13 to a motor- driven cutter 1, which cuts the swim bladder free from the back 7. The machine comprises a fixed beam (guide wedge 6) which guides the back to a horizontal mechanical cutter 1. The guide wedge 6 is connected to the frame 4 of the machine. Its bottom part is sprung so that it can cut different sized swim bladders 8. On the top side it has a depression 38 for the spinal column 3a. The movement is driven by a guide device in the form of a wheel 13, belt or arm above the guide wedge 6. The guide device 13, 28 has a groove for the dorsal crest 21, which together with the guide wedge 6 prevents the back rotating about the axis of the guide device. If there is one guide wheel 13 it has a groove for the dorsal crest. If there [illegible] 13 between them they form an intermediate space for the dorsal crest. The guide wheel is equipped with spikes 16, which stick into the back 7 and increase the frictional resistance and hence the guide force. The guide wedge 6 has a tip which sticks into the swim bladder 8 and cutter edge which cuts or tears a hole in its front and back ends. The guide wheel 13 is enclosed by a screen to prevent accidents. There may be two cutters and they are enclosed by a screen. <IMAGE>
