A protective headgear 2 comprises a skull-protecting shell 4 and a retention assembly 6, the retention assembly 6 having a closing member 14 which self-releases under a predetermined force. The closing member 14 may comprise a releasable buckle and may be located at the side of the wearer's head. The closing member 14 may self-release when subjected to a force of less than 27.5 Newtons. The headgear 2 may comprise impact and cushioning pads which are located on an interior surface of the shell. The cushioning pads may be removable. The retention assembly 6 may be attached to the shell 4 with ratchet fastener rivets 32 which may be formed from nylon and may be received in countersunk holes in the shell 4. The shell 4 may have an outer layer of relatively dense material and an inner layer of less dense material.
