The apparatus (1) comprises an underwater pontoon (3), positioning units (6, 9) for keeping the pontoon in a stationary position above the bed (G), a sliding device mounted on the pontoon, and a drive system for moving the sliding device along the pontoon in order to create the desired profile in the bed. An independent claim is also included for an underwater bed profiling method using this apparatus, in which the pontoon is placed in a first stationary position above the bed and then the sliding device is moved along the pontoon, after which the pontoon is moved into further stationary positions and movement of the sliding device is repeated.
