Provided is an occupant protection device for protecting an occupant of a vehicle by moving a movable head rest (5) forward with respect to the vehicle at a collision pre-stage before collision of an object to the back of the vehicle. The occupant protection device includes an electrostatic capacity sensor (14) arranged in the head rest and the forward movement amount of the head rest is controlled according to the change state of the electrostatic capacity detected by the electrostatic capacity sensor upon forward movement of the head rest.
