The present invention provides a decorating system that applies images directly to the surface 26 of an item 16. This decorating can occur with no contact between a printing engine 12 and the item 16 and/or with a single pass of the printing engine 12 proximal to the item 16. The decoration of items 16 can further include computer control of the printing system to allow for creating of a decoration image at a first location, and transfer of that image to a second location for application of that image directly to the surface of an item to be decorated.
