A highly precise position detection signal, which is hardly influenced by a temperature change, is produced by a simple processing circuit. From digital data obtained by displacing two objects at a constant speed, position data?<SUB>0</SUB> is calculated by a position data calculation unit (2). The position data ?<SUB>0</SUB> is encoded by an error correcting parameter acquisition unit (4) and is stored in a first storage unit (5). Sensor temperature information and encoded data for the temperature change are stored in a third storage unit (9). An error containing position data generation unit (6) reads and decodes a correction coefficient. A positional temperature change correction unit (10) calculates position data?<SUB>1</SUB> having a corrected temperature change component of the position data ?<SUB>0</SUB>. An error correcting position table creation unit (7) creates a correction table of the decoded table and ideal position data, and stores the correction table in a second storage unit (8). An error correction unit (11) reads the position data ?<SUB>1</SUB>, and refers to the correction table with that position data thereby to output the corrected position data ?.
