970,770. Collet chucks. ERICKSON TOOL CO. Aug. 12, 1963 [June 6, 1963], No. 31807/63. Headings B3B and B3K. A collet chuck comprises an externally tapered collet 17 which is internally threaded at its rear end to receive a driving sleeve 18. The sleeve has radial openings 20 housing a locking pin 21 which engages a flat 19 on the tool shank 8. The collet and sleeve are together inserted in a chuck body 1 having an internal taper which co-operates with the collet. A nose-piece 12 threadably engages the body 1 and retains the collet and sleeve therein. The screw action of the nose-piece also effects axial movement of the collet by way of the bevelled ring 9 and return ring 14 which effects in co-operation with the tapered surfaces, the gripping and releasing of the collet and sleeve on the tool shank. The shank is prevented from rotating and axial movement in the collet by the pin 21 and the flat 19. The axial position of the flat 19 is adjusted by screw 28 in the sleeve. An alternative embodiment has a tapered body only, which is radially split into three segments with springs between each. Axial adjustment of the tool shank in relation to the locking pin is effected by a screw in the chuck body. |
