The cover is provided on its underneath side with a backing (2) of air- and water -permeable material so that rubbish and small particles cannot fall through the recesses in the cover . The interspaces in the cover can be cleaned by sweeping or suction cleaning. The backing is preferably made of non-flammable woven material or mesh and is pressed and fixed from below against the cover. the case of tree grates the backing extends practically up to the tree trunk.
