Method for amplifying electromagnetic signal beams having frequencies in the optical region comprises producing a pumping beam by superimposing the beam from at least two pumping sources (5a-5c) of different wavelengths. The wavelength of each pumping source is selected so that the Brillouin yield spectra of the single sources are superimposed. An independent claim is also included for a system for amplifying a signal beam propagating in the forward direction in a waveguide (2).
