The spreader, e.g. for fertilizer, has a stirring screw (REH) at the base of the hopper (BE) above the outlet (AO). A sensor system (SS) measures an operating parameter for the screw motor, e.g. the speed of revolution, and compares it with a threshold value. A control unit (SE) switches off the motor if divergence for the threshold value indicates e.g. a blockage in the base of the hopper.
