FIELD: treatment of plastic materials, for instance, with the help of irradiation beam, particularly, apparatuses and methods for twisting strands of plastic material to increase uniformity of exposure dose directed to strand. SUBSTANCE: apparatus has radiation beam oscillator and device for moving the strand along the trajectory determined beforehand across irradiation beam. The device for moving the strand includes appliance for twisting the moving strand in alternating first and second opposite directions of rotation when the strand is exposed to irradiation beam. Apparatus also has a row of idle rolls for direction of strand along the configuration of double figure of eight with provision of multiple passages and irradiation. In addition, twisting appliance has means for removal of twisting for periodic weakening of strand twisting. Twisting appliance is provided with means of vibration for moving the first clamping roll relative to the second clamping roll in alternating first and second opposite directions for twisting the strand fastened between the pair of clamping rolls. The method of strand irradiation includes generation of irradiation beam and movement of strand along preset trajectory across irradiation beam. Simultaneously, strand is twisted in alternating first and second opposite directions of rotation when strand is exposed to irradiation with irradiation beam. Strand is directed along configuration of double figure of eight with provision of multiple passages and irradiation. According to the second version, in moving of strand, simultaneous monitoring of exposure dose is effected to obtain the strand with parts of its cross-section radiated differentially. EFFECT: provision of irradiation of strand material with constant and uniform peripheral exposure dose to attain desired change of material properties and higher energy efficiency of the process. 55 cl, 10 dwg
