Hydrogels of polyvinylimidazole and their use as insoluble pH-regulating pellets

Hydrogel provided as tablets capable of regulating without dissolving, any pH of an aqueous solution, to finally convert the pH to 7. These tablets may be removed from the solution at any time without modifying the pH and they may be reused after washing. The buffering speed depends on the initial pH and may be controlled by modification of the mass and the composition of the tablet. The hydrogels are obtained by copolymerization of a vinylheterocyclic and divinylic comonomer in an aqueous solution at a temperature of about 60 DEG C, in an inert atmosphere. By adjusting the proportion of cross-linking material and the concentrations of comonomers, the cross-linking of the hydrogel may be regulated according to the desired utilization of the product.
