<p>The device has a variably operatable actuator unit (10) for adjusting internal combustion engine cylinder charging using a charge-cycle valve (11). An operating unit (12) is provided for operating the actuator unit to obtain internal combustion engine braking effect. Another variably operatable actuator unit (13) is provided for adjusting the cylinder-charging using another charge-cycle valve (14). The operating unit is provided to adjust two different brake modes. The operating and actuator units produce two different opening strokes of the valve.</p>
