A process for condensing and polymerizing monomeric furfuryl alcohol to a stable intermediate stage comprises heating a body of furfuryl alcohol to a temperature sufficient to effect volatilization of the monomeric furfuryl alcohol, contacting the monomeric furfuryl alcohol vapours with activated alumina containing at least 50% by weight of gamma alumina, and removing the liquid product of the intermolecular condensation reaction from contact with the activated alumina. Water formed during the reaction may be continuously removed as vapour, and the liquid product may be mixed with the body of furfuryl alcohol being heated. The body of furfuryl alcohol may be heated until the boiling temperature thereof indicates the complete elimination of monomeric furfuryl alcohol. Water and monomer vapours from the catalyst zone may be condensed and separated, the water being discharged to waste and the monomer recycled to the heating zone. The process may be effected in a plurality of heating and catalyst zones. The alumina is preferably granular and may be activated by heating at 700 to 1100 DEG F. The products may be used in preparing foundry moulds and cores.
