PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an excellent cleaning function by reducing frictional force generated when a cleaning blade presses and slides in contact with the elastic layer of an intermediate transfer member and reducing adhesive force by which toner particles are stuck and carried on the surface of the elastic layer of the intermediate transfer member. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus using liquid developer, the intermediate transfer member 40 having the elastic layer is used, and also the edge of an intermediate transfer member cleaning blade 46 is made to abut on the intermediate transfer member 40, and compaction mechanisms 43, 53Y and 61 applying bias in a direction where the toner particles of the liquid developer are pressed against the elastic layer are provided on a more upstream side in the moving direction of the intermediate transfer member 40 than the intermediate transfer member cleaning blade 46.
