PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal coated optical fiber in which the metallic film can be easily removed in terminal machining and in which the thickness of the metallic film can be increased, and also to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The metal coated optical fiber is characterized in that a metallic film (2) composed of gold, silver, etc., or the alloy is formed on the outer periphery of an optical fiber (1) made up of a core (1a) and a clad (1d) and that a minute gap (3) is formed between the clad (1d) and the metallic film (2).
