The system (1) has a wireless local area network (WLAN) (15) communicating between a hotspot (3) and a motor vehicle (20). A communication system (16) automatically transmits information pertaining to a position of the hotspot from the motor vehicle to a centre (10). The information pertaining to the position of the hotspot is a position of the motor vehicle in the range of the WLAN. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an information system.
