<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording material and an optical recording medium, which can acquire sufficient recording and reproduction characteristics when information is recorded and reproduce by recording light with a wavelength of approximate 400 nm. <P>SOLUTION: The optical recording material, which is used for the optical recording medium capable of being subjected to the recording of information by light irradiation, contains a chelate compound which consists of a metal and an azomethine compound expressed by formula (1), (2) or (3). In formula (1), (2) or (3), X<SP>1</SP>H represents a group with active hydrogen; the plurality of X<SP>1</SP>Hs in the same molecule can be identical with or different from one another; R<SP>1</SP>represents an alkyl group or an alkenyl group, which has at least the X<SP>1</SP>H as a substituent; the plurality of R<SP>1</SP>s in the same molecule can be identical with or different from one another; Ar represents the group which is expressed by formula (11), (12) or (13); and Z represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group capable of having a substituent, or an aryl group capable of having a substituent.
