摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an in-line monitoring apparatus with a temperature compensator and an optical receiver, and to provide a method for stabilizing the gain of an avalanche photodiode("APD") over the extended range of input power values, corresponding to temperature change. <P>SOLUTION: This apparatus can include one or more power monitoring stages coupled in parallel to the APD for generating one or more measurement signals at an original position. The apparatus also includes a temperature compensator configured to adjust an operational parameter for the APD as the function of temperature and a measurement signal. The temperature compensator adjusts the bias to maintain a substantially uniform gain across temperature variations to facilitate increased sensitivity to monitor an input power, at lower levels than such a case that the bias is not adjusted by the temperature compensator in response to the temperature.
