The method involves melting a solder with the help of heat energy. The part of the heat energy is produced at a soldering joint through an exothermic reaction that is started by initiating activation energy, where a reactive substance present at the soldering joint is used in the exothermic reaction. The reactive substance or reaction mixture comprising an active substance is applied on a surface to be soldered, where the surface is provided with a coating before the soldering procedure. An independent claim is also included for a heat exchanger comprising different metallic base materials.
