PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat display device wherein discharged gas can be effectively captured, and a getter is not much affected even if electrons collide with an anode electrode. SOLUTION: The flat display device is composed of: a cathode panel CP which has effective regions EF<SB>A</SB>, EF<SB>C</SB>, and ineffective regions NE<SB>A</SB>, NE<SB>C</SB>, and in which a plurality of electron emitting regions EA are provided on a support 10; and an anode panel AP in which a plurality of phosphor regions 22 and anode electrodes are provided on a substrate 20. A plurality of the electron emitting regions EA, and a plurality of phosphor regions 22 are arranged in a two dimensional matrix shape respectively in the portion of the support 10 composing the effective region EF<SB>C</SB>, EF<SB>A</SB>, and in the portion of the substrate 20. The cathode panel CP is joined to the anode panel AP at respective peripheral fringe parts through a joining member, and a getter layer 50 is provided in the portion of the substrate 20, which is the inside of the joining member and forms the ineffective region NE<SB>A</SB>, with a gap kept from the phosphor region 22.
