PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and a zoom magnification control method whereby a zoom function can more effectively be utilized. SOLUTION: When focusing on an object in response to half-depression of a shutter key is successful, even if the optical zoom magnification does not reach a telescopic side maximum magnification, the zoom magnification at that point of time is fixed (SA1 to SA4). Thereafter when a zoomup instruction is received, zoomup is executed wherein the electronic zoom magnification is increased while the optical zoom magnification is fixed (SA5 to SA9).
