PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color separation and composite optical system capable of reducing a shading phenomenon by improving an adhesion method so as to suppress distortion caused by internal heat generation to the minimum when an optical component which is a rectangular thin plate such as a wavelength plate is fixed to a holder. SOLUTION: In the color separation and composite optical system, a color separation optical system has the following structure; the optical component 1 as a rectangular thin plate whose rectangular surface is allowed to face an optical path between a color separation optical system and reflection type spatial light modulation elements corresponding to respective colors separated to three principal colors is arranged via the holder, wherein either two sides only of length sides and width sides which are respectively opposite to each other are attached and fixed to the holder 2. As the result, the distortion of the optical component 1 caused by internal heat generation of a projector can be drastically reduced and the color separation and composite optical system that hardly causes the shading phenomenon can be provided.
