PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine tool with a workpiece measuring instrument, which can measure a workpiece near a machining position, and protects the workpiece measuring instrument from being affected by chips and cutting heat during non-machining. SOLUTION: The machine tool has a bed, and a cover for covering a machining area R which incorporates a workpiece support means 6, a machining means, and the workpiece measuring instrument 31. Further the machine tool is provided with a position switching means 32 for switching the position of the workpiece measuring instrument 31 between a machining area R and a storage position B outside the machining area. The workpiece support means 6 is laterally movable, and the workpiece measuring instrument 31 is longitudinally movable, thereby arbitrarily switching its position. Then the workpiece support means 6 laterally moves with respect to the workpiece measuring instrument 31 that has moved forward, and thus the workpiece measuring instrument 31 measures the workpiece W.
