PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector in which the influence of the variance in the height of beams is eliminated, high contrast ratio is obtained, thus proper images are displayed. SOLUTION: A diffraction element 1 comprises two or more ribbon-shaped beams 5 which are arranged and have a reflecting region 9, and the diffraction element 1 comprises a diffraction grating, by driving a part of beams 5 faced by a lower electrode 3 side by electrostatic suction force acting between the beams and the lower electrode 3. The beams are so arranged that the distance Ha between the driven beams 5a and the lower electrode 3, when they are not driven is larger than the distance Hb between the non-driven beams and the lower electrode 3.
