PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retain stable discharge effect for an intermediate transfer belt and effectively prevent scattering of toner in a primary transfer section. SOLUTION: In a tandem system image forming apparatus, a primary transfer unit 40 is configured such that a primary transfer roller 45 and a discharging member 47 disposed downstream in the moving direction A of the intermediate transfer belt 11 are integrated by a holder 41 and a mounting plate 43. The image forming apparatus has a contact/separation mechanism 50 that brings the primary transfer unit 40 into contact with the intermediate transfer belt 11 and separates it therefrom, in a direction almost perpendicular to the moving direction A of the belt. The contact/separation mechanism 50 brings the primary transfer roller 45 into press-contact with a photoreceptor drum 21 with predetermined pressure by a compression coil spring 52 via the intermediate transfer belt 11, and also brings the destaticizing member 47 into contact with the intermediate transfer belt 11 with predetermined pressure.
