PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for purifying a water quality suitable for removal of ammonia from ammonia-containing water of a relatively low concentration at a water area such as rivers, and lakes and marshes, and also without forming a scale and generating an excessive ion causing inhibition of an ammonia treatment reaction; and a method for purifying the water quality. SOLUTION: The apparatus for purifying the water quality comprises a zeolite packed tank (1) packing with zeolite for adsorbing ammonia, a line (2) for feeding ammonia-containing raw water to the zeolite packed tank (1), a line (3) for discharging ammonia-free treated water yielded by adsorbing ammonia to zeolite and a hydrochloric acid aqueous solution storage tank (5) feeding a hydrochloric acid aqueous solution for detaching ammonia from zeolite adsorbing ammonia to the zeolite packed tank (1) through a line (4).
