A regulation adjusts a combustion state variable, that characterizes the combustion state, to a setpoint value. A control and/or a regulation influences a torque variable that characterizes the torque of the internal combustion engine and/or the noise variable that characterizes the noise of the internal combustion engine, using a control variable.
