PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for controlling an active period of a semiconductor memory arranged so that current consumption at a refresh operation can be reduced. SOLUTION: This apparatus includes: an active controller that generates active control signals for determining the active periods of at least two or more individual banks according to whether the refresh operation is performed; and an active signal generator that generates the active signal for each of the banks so as to correspond to the aforementioned active control signal.
