<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exchange information between clients and a server, namely, head end or broadcast network operator. <P>SOLUTION: A messaging system enables a server (10) to assign unique identifiers to a plurality of clients (12). These identifiers enable a client (12) to determine whether a message is specifically targeted to that client (12) or, as an alternative, whether the client (12) is a member of a group of targeted clients (12). The server (10) can send messages containing an identifier to agents (44, 45, 46, 48) on one or more clients (12).
