The present invention provides a method of characterising an area of interest within a body. The method comprises obtaining a frequency distribution of intensities of a plurality of magnetic resonance responses received from respective regions in the area of interest and characterising the obtained frequency distribution to obtain numerical parameters. The method also comprises incorporating at least one of the numerical parameters in a marker for a disease to determine the presence or degree of the disease.
