PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid ejection device cleaning method according to which a check valve arranged across a liquid supply passage is usable as a chalk valve in common when a chalk cleaning is carried out, dispenses with provision of an additional chalk valve around the liquid supply passage, and contributes to cost reduction of the device and prevention of upsizing of the same, and to provide the liquid ejection device. SOLUTION: A printer 1 serving as the liquid ejection device is formed of first ink cartridges 10 to 13 each having an ink pack 100 and an air chamber arranged therein, a recording head 8, the liquid supply passages for introducing inks from the respective cartridges to the recording head 8, and the check valves 126. The printer 1 is further formed of a suction pump 21 for sucking the inks from nozzles of the recording head 8, and a negatively pressurizing pump 16 connected to the air chambers, for negatively pressurizing the air chambers and closing the check valves 126.
