PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a processable polymer material enabling the color development and decoloring to be easily regulated by the control of a voltage; and to provide a method for producing the polymer material and an electrochromic element using the polymer material. SOLUTION: The polymer material represented by formula (1) (wherein, M is a metal ion; R is a spacer containing a carbon atom and a hydrogen atom, or directly connecting a terpyridyl group; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>the whole of which are the same, each of which is different, or a part of which are the same are each hydrogen, an aryl group or an alkyl group; and n is an integer of≥2 signifying a polymerization degree) contains a bis(terpyridine) derivative, a metal ion and a counter anion.
