PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently back-washing a membrane module which filters raw water in an upwardly-flow-type and dead-end system without using any flocculant. SOLUTION: In the back-washing method of the membrane module, turbid substances sticking to the membrane surface are peeled off by making back-washing water flow from a secondary side of the membrane to a primary side as done in the past in a monolithic type ceramic membrane module 1 in the upwardly-flow and dead-end-filtering system, and the peeled-off turbid substances are discharged from the upper part of the primary side of the membrane module by feeding raw water from the lower part of the primary side of the membrane module at the linear flow velocity of 50 cm/sec or less in the cell of the ceramic membrane with a valve 2 open in the upper part of the primary side of the membrane module 1.
