The invention relates to a method for the subscriber-specific activation of network-based mobility management and to an authentication server for the subscriber-specific activation of network-based mobility management. According to the inventive method, network-based mobility management (PMIP) is enforced, even if the mobile terminal supports terminal-based mobility management (CMIP). This gives a network provider complete control over mobility management in his network, preventing configuration problems during the MIP configuration of mobile terminals. In said inventive method, after the successful authentication of a subscriber, the authentication server (11) transmits an authentication confirmation message (SUCCESS) to an authentication client (6C) in an access network (4). The received authentication confirmation message (SUCCESS) contains an activation attribute (PMIP ONLY) for activating network-based mobility management (PMIP), if the authentication server does not provide a common mobile key for terminal-based mobility management (CMIP).
