METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PRINTER CALIBRATION

A method provides control over the dynamic range and gradation of a colorant channel in a print system. Instead of calibrating a system in a way that a printable level corresponds with a specified value of a single color component, for example CIE L*, such a system is calibrated so that a printable level corresponds with approximating two or three color components, for example both CIE L* and CIE b* . The approximation uses a distance function. The method achieves better consistency of color performance over time and across several printers of a given type, especially in the presence of printer variability and measurement error. Both a method and a system are described.
