PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the technology of shortening a time interval from an output instruction to first printing, in an image forming apparatus incorporating a plurality of cartridges for toners of the same color. SOLUTION: The printer incorporates the plurality of cartridges 18a to 18d for the toners of the same color, which are disposed in that order from the downstream side to the upstream side in the rotating direction of an intermediate transfer belt 2. In the printer, when image data on the first sheet of a job is processed, determinations are made in order from the furthest downstream cartridge 18a whether image formation is allowed or not (steps S103, S107 and S109).
