PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a high-viscosity and high-molecular weight acrylic water-soluble polymer high in solubility to water with sufficiently reduced insolubles. SOLUTION: The method for producing the acrylic water-soluble polymer comprises extruding acrylic water-soluble polymer's hydrous gel from an extruder. Specifically, the extrusion process comprises extruding the hydrous gel at a specific mechanical power of 0.06-0.14 kwh/kg, wherein the hydrous gel is 550-650 mPa.s in viscosity measured at 30°C using a Brookfield-type viscometer and 0.5-5 mass% in insolubles content.
