PURPOSE: A computer and a method for controlling a data communication of a computer are provided to reduce a manufacturing cost and enlarge a mounting space of hardware. CONSTITUTION: In a computer including a LAN circuit unit and a modem circuit unit, a common connection unit(15) makes a LAN signal line(17) of the LAN circuit unit and a modem signal line(18) of the modem circuit unit be connected in conjunction. A signal line kind detecting unit(30) is mounted in the common connection unit(15) and checks whether the LAN signal line(17) or the modem signal line(18) is connected to the common connection unit(15). A control unit makes the common connection unit(15) be connected to one out of the LAN circuit unit and the modem circuit unit for transmitting data according to kinds of the signal lines based on the checking result.
