<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device which has light sources of four colors that include light sources of further emitting white light (W) other than the light sources of RGB, and is capable of reducing the power consumption. <P>SOLUTION: The electro-optical apparatus is, for example, a liquid crystal display apparatus and comprises a display panel, such as liquid crystal display panel; and the illumination device. The illumination device has a plurality of light sources that emit respective colors of red (R), green (G), blue (B) and white (W). Here, as the light sources, for example, LEDs are used. The illumination device is configured so as to illuminate the display panel, by allowing the display panel to transmit light emitted from the plurality of light sources. The chromaticity of the display screen of the display panel is adjusted to a predetermined chromaticity, by changing the time for which each of the plurality of light sources is turned on during the time period of one frame. By doing so, power consumption of the plurality of light sources can be reduced, as compared with the case, where the plurality of light sources are made to emit light by flowing a constant current through the light sources. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
