PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which performs optical modulation at two stages, with the optical system reduced in size. SOLUTION: An optical path in a projector 10 successively changes from a first direction AB to a fourth direction GH through a second direction CD and a third direction EF, and the optical system constituting the projector 10 is so compact as to be efficiently held in the square optical path. Therefore, the projector 10 is housed in extremely narrow space because of the compact optical system, and the miniaturization of the projector 10 is efficiently achieved.
