The method involves recognizing an error based on fulfillment of two conditions, where one of the conditions is fulfilled if a difference current is larger than a threshold value, and another condition is fulfilled if a variable characterizing a rail pressure is smaller than the threshold value. The difference current is the difference of currents, which flow into a buffer condenser and characterize a charging current of a piezo-actuator (130). An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring a fuel metering system.
