<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new irradiation device that can efficiently convert non-polarized light from a light source into linearly polarized light as irradiating light. <P>SOLUTION: The device includes a light source 1 emitting substantially monochromatic non-polarized light, a reflector 2 disposed as surrounding a half of the light source and reflecting the substantially monochromatic non-polarized light emitting from the light source, a polarizer 3 disposed at the opening of the reflector and transmitting a linearly polarized light component in a predetermined direction of the monochromatic light and reflecting the rest, and a birefringent means 4 disposed between the polarizer and reflector 2 and changing the polarization state of the light reflected by the polarizer, wherein the polarizer 3 is a photonic crystal element that is configured to function as a polarizer upon the substantially monochromatic non-polarized light emitted from the light source. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
