The present invention relates to a nostocarboline compound of the formula (I) and its use as a biocidal agent. In this formula R 1 , R 3 , R 4 and R 6 are selected from the group consisting of H, F, Cl, Br, I, a C 1 -C 20 aliphatic residue, and a C 1 -C 20 aliphatic residue comprising a carbocyclic or heterocyclic residue;
R 2 is selected from the group consisting of H and Cl;
R 5 is selected from the group consisting of H, a C 1 -C 20 aliphatic residue, and a C 1 -C 20 aliphatic residue comprising a carbocyclic or heterocyclic residue;
R 7 is selected from the group consisting of a C 1 -C 20 aliphatic residue, a C 1 -C 20 aliphatic residue comprising a carbocyclic or heterocyclic residue, and a linker bound to a bioactive factor;
R 8 is selected from the group consisting of H, a C 1 -C 6 aliphatic carboxylic acid, ester, or amide, and a C 3 -C 20 carbocyclic residue; and
X - is a negatively charged ion.
