摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination unit in which the structure of a prism for synthesizing light emitted from a compact light source is improved and an image projection apparatus adopting the illumination unit. SOLUTION: The illumination unit is provided with: first, second and third light source units which respectively emit first, second and third light beams of different ranges of wavelength; a first triangular prism having a first incident surface through which the first light beam is made incident and a second incident surface through which the second light beam is made incident; a second triangular prism having a third incident surface through which the third light beam is made incident; a first color filter formed on the second incident surface to reflect the first light beam made incident from the inside of the first triangular prism, transmit the second light beam and direct the first and second light beams toward a first exit/reflection surface; and a second color filter formed on a fourth incident surface to reflect the third light beam made incident from the inside of the second triangular prism, transmit the first and second light beams emitted from the first exit/reflection surface and direct the first, second and third light beams toward a second exit/reflection surface.
